As an aspiring entrepreneur, the importance of staying in motion and moving forward is paramount. Smaller companies need to move even faster to succeed and will often find themselves with limited information to make crucial decisions. No action plan is perfect, however having the confidence to move forward with your goals can make all the difference early in the game.
Have no fear, this is where having a mentor comes in!
Having an experienced mentor as a guide can help you avoid making crucial early mistakes that would have otherwise slowed you down. Mistakes will be made and perhaps should be, yet a mentor can help you execute your plans efficiently with minimal fallout.
“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail” - Benjamin Franklin
Keep in mind it is not as though you are ever asking your mentor for permission, instead you are collecting as much data as possible to help make the correct decision at any given moment. As a focused entrepreneur, you are constantly collecting and analyzing data to help you make quality long-term and short-term decisions.
A mentor who has been in your shoes before will be the best person to help you prepare for those tough decisions!
Here is what you should look for in a quality mentor and why they can be so important in an entrepreneur’s success:
Success as an Entrepreneur
A great mentor is often an individual who has been or still is a successful entrepreneur themselves.
Try to find a mentor who has walked in your shoes and made it out the other side in one piece! There is nothing more inspiring than someone who shares your goals and vision for the future. Taking advice from someone is much easier when they have your respect and you know they genuinely want you to succeed as they did. Be sure to find a mentor who is living proof that what you are doing is possible and profitable!
This same approach can be applied when considering current and future investors. We have found our most effective early investors were likeminded and had boots on the ground. An investor who can empathize with you and the challenges of creating a business is sure to be helpful early in your growth.
Expert Level Experience
It is key to find a mentor who is a master in your field.
Keep in mind the most effective mentor should excel in areas where you struggle the most. This will require acute self-awareness, but will ensure you have a well-rounded approach to any problem. Don’t forget that someone with a prestigious title won’t necessarily make the best mentor. Consider a mentor who is still grinding in the field and hustling to succeed. You want a mentor who is just as motivated as you while offering both the skills and expertise you need!
Action Oriented, Yet Patient
While these may seem like contradicting qualities you will find that the best mentors have both patience and an action oriented approach to work. Likely the best mentors are going to be extremely busy running their own businesses, yet will often display patience and will focus on fellow entrepreneurs when they have committed themselves.
Actions speak louder than words, so watch closely and be mindful of what your mentor is doing and just how they are doing it. The best mentors will be getting work done, offering up proof by way of action!
Qualities of a Coach
The best sports teams have great coaches who offer direct advice while staying supportive. The last thing you want in mentor is an echo chamber. A mentor who is worried about hurting your feelings by offering sound advice is of no use. The best mentors will offer great advice at opportune moments without hesitation. Keep in mind this candid attitude will save you precious time in the long run allowing you to reach your goal of long term growth.
If you don’t have a mentor already don’t worry, it is never too late!
Start hunting now and don’t be afraid to get yourself on the radar of some of the bigger fish in the sea.
I hope you are feeling inspired and ready to hit the ground running in your search for the ideal mentor.
Just remember to follow the tips above to ensure you find a mentor who has the qualities you need to help your ideas grow!
